1. The Brief Introduction of PVD
PVD is the abbreviation of Physical Vapor Deposition. It refers to under the vacuum condition, with low voltage, high current arc discharge technology, by using gas discharge to make target material evaporate and the materials that have vaporized and gas ionize, then make the materials that have vaporized and the reactant deposite on the workpiece by using electric field acceleration.
2.The Development of PVD Technology
PVD technology appeared in the late 1970s, and the prepared films have the advantages of high hardness, low friction coefficient, well wear-resistance and chemical stability, etc. At first, the successful application in the field of high speed steel cutter has attracted great attention of the countries in the world manufacturing industry, people have not only developed coating equipments which have such advantages as high performance, high reliability, but also made a further research of coating application in the cemented carbide and ceramic cutting tools. Compared with the CVD process, the temperature of PVD fabrication processing is low, and it has no influence on the bending strength of cutting tool materials under 600 ℃; The internal stress state of the film is the compressive stress, which is suitable for the coating of the carbide precision complex tool; The PVD process has no adverse effect on the environment and conforms to the development direction of modern green manufacturing. Now PVD coating technology has been widely used in cemented carbide end milling cutter, drill, ladder drill, drill, reamer, tap, indexable milling insert, special-shaped coating processing tools, welding tools, and so on.
PVD technology not only improves the bonding strength between the films and substrate materials, but also the coating composition develops from the first generation TiN to TiC, TiCN, ZrN, CrN, MoS2, TiAlN, TiAlCN, TiN-AlN, CNx, DLC and Ta-C and other multivariate composite coating.
3.The Advantages of PVD Coating
1) Beautiful, thin coating, and it can provide a variety of color choices;
2) Good wear resistance and no fading;
3) It can improve the surface hardness of the products.
